SWIM PATROL
ROOKIE, RANGER STAR
Class Size: 6 students, 1 instructor
Prerequisite: Swim Kids 10 (children 12 years + can advance to the bronze program)
This is the on-ramp to lifeguarding for 9-12 year olds who are ready to go beyond the regular Red Cross program. Content is organized in 3 groups, water proficiency, first-aid and rescue. Swim Patrol develops swiming strength and efficiency with emphasis on Water Smart behavior. Skill drills enhance capability in the water, good physical conditioning and lifesaving judgement
BRONZE AWARDS
BRONZE STAR
Class Size: 6 students, 1 instructor
Prerequisite: 12 years of age, Swim Kids 10
(Duration: 15-20 hrs)
This course is designed to prepare candidates for Bronze Medallion by introducing fitness, water rescue and first aid components
BRONZE MEDALLION AND EMERGENCY FIRST AID
Class Size: 3 students, 1 instructor
Prerequisite: 13 years of age OR Bronze Star
(Duration: 15 - 20 hrs)
This award teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education - judgement, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows/carries and and defense/release methods in preparation for rescues of conscious nd unconscious victims. Lifesavers also develop endurance in a timed swim
BRONZE CROSS
Class Size: 3 students, 1 instructor
Prerequisite: Bronze Medallion + Emergency First Aid
(Duration: 15 - 20 hrs)
This course is designed for lifesavers that want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities
STANDARD 1ST AID & CPR (SFA & CPR-C)
Class Size: 12 students, 1 instructor
Prerequisite: None
(Duration: approx 13 - 16 hrs)
Standard First Aid provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. Standard First Aid incorporates all of Emergency First Aid and is designed for those who reqire a more in-depth understanding of first aid including: medical/legal aspects of first aid treatment, spinal injuries, heat or cold inuries, bone and joint injuries, abdominal and chest injuries, burns and medical emergencies, includes CPR-C certification
The first aid program is not restricted to aquatic candidates. You can use the Lifesaving Society's first aid awards to train non-aquatic staff (camp, playground, maintenance etc) and the general public
NATIONAL LIFEGUARD SERVICE (NLS)
Class Size: 12 students, 1 instuctor
Prerequisite: 16 years of age + Bronze Class + Standard First Aid & CPR C
(Duration: approx 40 hrs)
NLS is recognized as the standard measure of lifeguard performance in Canada. NLS education is designed to develop a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgement and a mature and responsible attitude toward the role of the lifeguard. The NLS award is designed to prepare lifeguards to fulfill this role as professional facilitators of safe, enjoyable aquatics
RED CROSS ASSISTANT WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR (AWSI)
Class Size: 12 students, 1 instructor
Prerequisite: 15 years of age + Bronze Cross
(Duration: approx. 30 hrs)
This course introduces candidates to the foundation of instructional skills by focusing on the theoretical knowledge that supports learning and teaching. This course guides the knowledge and skills needed to become an AWSI, by focusing on teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback. Candidates are also provided the opportunity to demonstrate and be evaluated on their understanding of skills and knowledge, through practical teaching experience and hands-on-assignments
RED CROSS WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR (WSI)
Class Size: 12 students, 1 instructor
Prerequisite: 16 years of age + AWSI + Bronze Cross or NLS
(Duration: approx. 25 hrs)
This course prepares candidates to instruct the Red Cross Swim programs. Candidates focus on strategies to introduce and develop swimming and water safety skills in the Red Cross Swim Preschoool, Red Cross Swim Kids and Teen and Adults program curriculum. Candidates are required to do in-water training and written assignments in order to complete the course
LIFESAVING INSTRUCTOR (LSSI)
Class Size: 12 students, 1 instructor
Prerequisite: 16 years of age + Bronze Cross or NLS
(Duration: approx 25 hrs)
This course prepares candidates to instruct the Lifesaving Swim Patrol, Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, Wading Pool Attendant, Lifesaving Fitness, Distinction Diploma, basic and Emergency First Aid and CPR-A, CPR-B, CPR-C
Current Lifesaving Instructors evaluate all items and certify candidates in Canadian Swim Patrol, Bronze Star, Lifesaving Fitness, Basic and Emergency First Aid, and CPR-A,B,C. Instructors evaluate some items in Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross and Distinction, but only Examiners may certify candidates in these awards.
